We are thrilled to announce a positive step in the ongoing efforts to promote equitable energy practices in Georgia. On February 25, the Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee approved Senate Bill 34 (SB 34) with an 8-5 vote, propelling the legislation to the Senate Rules Committee for further consideration.

SB 34 aims to ensure that large data centers are held financially accountable for the substantial energy infrastructure costs they incur. This initiative addresses concerns that residential customers have been disproportionately burdened with rising energy bills due to the immense power demands of these facilities. Notably, since late 2022, Georgia Power’s residential customers have experienced an average monthly increase of approximately $43 in their energy bills. This surge is partly attributed to the rapid expansion of data centers, which often require energy capacities sufficient to power hundreds of thousands of homes.

Our dedicated Encounter GA team member, John Duke, of St John the Evangelist Catholic Parish in Hapeville, GA, delivered compelling public testimony during the committee hearing. John’s advocacy underscored the necessity of SB 34 in safeguarding consumers from unjust energy cost hikes. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to John for his witness to caring for creation and the poor - ensuring the burden of power bills are equitably distributed across our state.

The journey for SB 34 is far from over. As it progresses to the Senate floor, we encourage our community to remain engaged and vocal in support of this critical legislation. Collectively, we can champion policies that promote fairness and transparency in our state’s energy sector.

For those interested in viewing John’s impactful testimony, it is available at the 1-hour and 37-minute mark of the committee hearing recording.
